The Islamic State has ceased operating in Iraq for the time being. Pro-Iran groups have re-started their attacks upon U.S. targets however as retaliation for Washington’s support of Israel in the war in Gaza.
For the third week in a row there were no reported incidents by the Islamic State in Iraq. This had never happened since 2003 but it has now happened four times this year. It appears that IS’s remaining members in the country are concerned solely with survival and are afraid to carry out attacks because they can’t afford any losses.
On the other hand armed factions working under the umbrella organization the Islamic Resistance in Iraq carried out five attacks upon Iraqi bases housing U.S. troops during the week. Al-Harir airbase in Irbil was attacked with drones on October 18 and October 21. On October 18 two drones were shot down over Al-Asad airbase in Anbar, then it was hit with rockets on October 19 and there was another drone strike on October 21. This is for show to make a statement against Washington’s backing of Israel and not meant to cause any real damage.
As usual Baghdad made an official statement that these groups are operating outside of the government and ordered the security forces to try to stop them. This is the fiction that the U.S. and Iraq plays that the pro-Iran groups are not an official part of the security forces when they carry out these attacks when everyone knows they are.
The Biden administration has also blamed Iran for encouraging and facilitating these operations. That should be no surprise as all the Iraqi groups involved are armed and funded by Tehran.
