The Islamic State has largely ceased to operate in Iraq. There was just 1 security incident by the group from September 22-28. There were 2 the week before, 1 the second week of September and 1 the first week of the month. It’s been 18 weeks since there were more than 5 incidents in the country in one week. This was the 33rd straight week and the 35th of 36 weeks during the year where there were single digit incidents.
The one attack took place in Abu Saida in central Diyala when an IED went off and killed a civilian and wounded another. This area used to be the headquarters for the Islamic State in Iraq but it like the rest of the country has quieted down.
The Iraqi Joint Operations Command recently said that there is around 500 IS militants in Iraq. They are mostly in the disputed territories in northern Iraq. The group has also been able to recruit people in some areas of the country. If there are that many members in Iraq it’s a mystery what they are doing because they certainly aren’t carrying out any missions. There are probably far fewer and their sole concern is surviving by holing up inside their bases so they don’t get caught or killed by the government’s forces.
