Violence In Iraq Hits A New Low In Sep 2023

Violence has continuously declined in Iraq during 2023 and hit a new low in September. There were only 5 incidents during the month. That compared to 11 in August. The previous monthly low was 9 incidents in March and July each. This is another sign that the Islamic State is near dead in Iraq.

During September the security incidents took place in Baghdad (1), Diyala (3), and Ninewa (1).

They left 8 casualties. 2 civilians were killed while 2 members of the Iraqi Security Forces and 3 civilians were injured. There were 5 casualties in Diyala, 2 in Baghdad and 1 in Ninewa.

2 civilians were wounded during an IS attack in northern Baghdad’s Tarmiya district. A checkpoint was attacked and two IEDs exploded in Diyala. Finally there was a shooting in southern Ninewa that killed 1 civilian. None of these were offensive operations. All seemed to be aimed at keeping people and the government out of insurgent areas. This is all that IS seems capable of right now. Whatever membership it has left seems to be holed up in camps and hoping to survive.
