Violence In Iraq June 2016

June 2016 had the highest casualties since 2014. That was due to the Fallujah operation, which took a heavy toll on the Iraqi forces. There were also several mass casualty bombings by the Islamic State.

The number of incidents has gone up and down every month of the year so far. In January there were 598, then 549 in February, 665 in March, 599 in April, 647 in May, and 598 in June.

In June there were 1,666 killed and 6,315 wounded. 13 Sahwa, 14 Peshmerga, 154 Hashd, 529 Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and 956 civilians died, along with 12 Sahwa, 64 Peshmerga, 270 Hashd, 1,119 ISF & Hashd, and 3,407 ISF being injured.

The U.N. reported 662 killed and 1,457 wounded for the month, while Iraq Body Count had 1,157 dead. The U.N. has not had steady reporting from Anbar, and Iraq Body Count does not include soldiers.

In the first six months of the year Musings On Iraq counted 3,656 incidents leading to 9,186 deaths and 15,575 injured. That compared to 3,693 attacks, 10,360 killed, and 10,904 wounded in the last six months of 2015. The true numbers are always higher as there are incidents that do not get into the press, and the Iraqi government has been suppressing its losses. To hint at how much is being under reported the number of injured is anywhere from two to five times higher than the number of dead. From July to December 2015 those two numbers were almost equal.

The largest driver of casualties in June was the fighting in Fallujah. There were 659 deaths and 4,743 wounded in Anbar. Of those 480 were fatalities amongst the Iraqis forces with another 4,584 wounded almost all from the Fallujah operation. Most of those figures came from Agence France Presse and Middle East Eye. The Badr Organization also said it lost 38 of its fighters with 52 wounded. On top of that the Islamic State killed 7 displaced and wounded another 52 trying to flee. The militants executed another 23 people within Fallujah. Government shelling was blamed for 41 civilian deaths and 53 injured within the city, and the Hashd were accused of executed 77 people fleeing IS.

Violence has almost completely fallen off in Babil. For the month there were only 10 incidents, 1 death and 4 injured. Since the major IS base at Jurf al-Sakhr was freed, IS has mostly been using the province to attack Baghdad and Anbar.

While IS has been losing on the battlefield it has picked up its terrorist attacks upon the capital. There were 267 incidents, 430 killed, and 1,241 wounded in Baghdad. Most of those were the result of 24 sticky bombs and 165 IEDs. At the same time there were a number of mass casualty bombings caused by 1 suicide car bomb and 9 suicide bombers with another 4 killed. Those left 82 dead and 199 wounded.

The Islamic State has restarted low level attacks in Diyala. In May and June there were an average of 1.8 incidents per day in the province, the highest since 2.1 in April 2015. These attacks are usually shootings, IEDs and mortar fire, but there have been some mass casualty bombings thrown in as well. In June there were 55 incidents, 47 dead, and 40 wounded.

Karbala witnessed its first car bombing since October 2014. IS also attacked through the Anbar-Karbala desert region, which was turned back by the Iraqi forces.

Violence went down in Kirkuk. In May IS launched a series of attacks upon the peshmerga, but in June that all ended. Instead the insurgents concentrated on low level attacks such as firing mortars at Oil Ministry offices, shootings, and IEDs. That led to 34 incidents, 34 dead, and 14 wounded.

The situation was different in Ninewa where the peshmerga and ISF continued to be hit. As the government re-launched its effort in the Makhmour district, IS counter attacked again and again. It also hit the Kurdish defensive line several times. The organization also executed 174 people and another 120 were found in two mass graves. In total, there were 57 incidents, 238 fatalities, and 27 injured.

Salahaddin had been very quiet for the start of 2016, but in June IS launched a number of high profile attacks upon the Tuz Kharmato district. That led to most of the 247 dead and 205 wounded for the month and also provoked the Hashd to kill several Sunni prisoners from Amerli prison in retaliation.

There were 14 successful vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs) in June. that was down from 29 in May. That might be a sign that the Islamic State’s spring offensive is coming to an end. In June there were 1 in Baghdad, 1 in Karbala, 1 in Ninewa, 2 in Anbar, and 9 in Salahaddin. Those killed 131 and wounded 253. The government said another 149 car bombs were destroyed, but that was likely an exaggeration.
