Security In Iraq Mar 1-7, 2024

Both the Islamic State and pro-Iran groups were active in Iraq during the first week of March.

 

At the start of the month there were two Islamic State incidents in Baghdad’s Tarmiya district in the north on the same day. First, an IED went off on an army unit killing 1 soldier and wounding 4 more. Later a sheikh’s house was attacked with gunfire and an RPG.

 

The last week of February there was only 1 insurgent incident and before that there were three weeks with no attacks at all. That points to the Islamic State being a shell of its former self.

 

A commander in the Counterterrorism service told Bas News that a new IS leader had been identified in Iraq and that he was trying to reorganize the group. Whether that will amount to anything is to be seen.

 

Pro-Iran groups claimed two drone strikes on Israel during the week. There is no confirmation that these attacks were actually carried out and if they did whether they were successful. It’s also not clear where the drones were launched from be it Iraq or Syria.

 

A ceasefire is still standing with these factions and there have been no attacks on US troops in Iraq since January 28.
