Americans Dominate Casualties In Iraq In Aug 2024

More than half of the casualties in Iraq in August 2024 were Americans. This resulted from an attack by pro-Iran groups and a joint Iraq-U.S. raid on an Islamic State camp. This was a decided change from previous months.

There were 7 security incidents involving the Islamic State in August although 2 weren’t attacks. The last time there were 7 IS incidents was back in May. Still 6 out of the 8 months of the year has seen single digit incidents with the insurgency.

In Anbar there were 3 incidents. There was a rare drone strike upon a Tribal Hashd HQ and an IED went off in Lake Thar Thar that killed 2 civilians. U.S. and Iraqi forces also conducted a raid looking for IS leadership which led to a gun battle that wounded 5 U.S. soldiers. 2 more Americans were injured falling from their helicopter.

In Diyala there were two IEDs against the security forces. 2 soldiers, 2 Hashd and 1 civilian were injured as a result.

An old bomb went off in Salahaddin’s Baiji which killed 2 civilians and wounded another.

Finally, some Asayesh came across a group of IS militants digging a tunnel in Sulaymaniya province that erupted in gunfire. 2 Asayesh were killed in the process.

There were 6 attacks by pro-Iran groups. At the start of August Ain Al-Assad airbase in Anbar that houses American troops were rocketed. The first one on August 5 wounded 5 U.S. soldiers and 2 U.S. contractors. 5 Hashd al-Shaabi members were arrested for one of these incidents but then released. The Sudani government also claimed it talked the Biden administration out of retaliating for that last attack.

The Iraqi Islamic Resistance claimed 6 attacks upon Israel as well during the month.

In February Iran and the Sudani government negotiated a ceasefire with these factions to stop operations against Americans. That resulted in just 1 incident in February. Then attacks increased each month peaking at 13 in May. After that they have dropped every month with 13 in June, 8 in July and now 6 in August.
