June saw the return of pro-Iran factions which carried out a limited series of attacks in Iraq in support of Tehran during the Israel-Iran conflict.
On June 13 the Israeli Defense Forces attacked several Iranian nuclear and military targets. In response, Tehran’s friends in Iraq began a number of small operations topped off by what appeared to be an attempt to take down Baghdad’s radar system.
One June 13 a drone was shot down outside the Ain Al-Assad airbase in Anbar. The base was then targeted by a missile on June 15. The facility houses Americans troops and has often been attacked by members of the Axis of Resistance made up of Hashd factions funded by Iran.
The last day of the conflict June 24 witnessed a coordinated offensive against Iraq’s air defenses. Two drones hit the radar system at Taji Base in northern Baghdad province and another struck the radar at Imam Ali Base in Dhi Qar. A fourth drone crashed in Radwaniya possibly heading towards another base at Baghdad International Airport. Additionally two drones were downed in Irbil province and another outside Ain Al-Assad. These attacks disrupted Iraq’s entire early warning system.
Iraq complained to the United Nations that 50 Israeli aircraft violated its airspace in one day carrying out missions against Iran. However Tehran was flying missiles and drones over Iraqi territory at the same time. In fact, crashed Iranian drones and missiles were found in Iraq nearly every day of the war. The attacks upon Iraq’s radars might have been an attempt to give Iran free reign through Iraq’s air space or perhaps the Americans had access to the system and Tehran was trying to deny them this information by taking down the network.
Pro-Iran groups have not really been active in Iraq since November 2024. That’s when a 14 month campaign ended against Israel and the United States in response to the war in Gaza.
