Life Goes On In Iraq Pilgrimage To Imam Kadhim Shrine Baghdad May 2014

 

May 2014 was the date of the annual pilgrimage to the shrine of Imam Musa al-Kadhim in Baghdad’s Kadhimiya district. The event remembers his death in the 8^th Century. Despite being a favorite target of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) each year, thousands of pilgrims make the trip from around Iraq and the region to the capital. Life Goes On In Iraq: Sabean Mandeans’ Golden Baptism Festival

 

Sabean Mandeans are considered one of the oldest religions in the world. Sabean is from the Aramaic word “saba” which means baptized. This is one of the basic rituals of the religion, being dipped into water to be baptized. Mandeans is from the Aramaic “yada – ada” to know, meaning that they are the baptized people who know about God. With violence increasing in Iraq it is always important to remember that people there are still trying to live their daily lives and go about their business. In some parts of Iraq this is easier than others. Najaf is one such area, which has not seen a single attack there in 2014. Here are some pictures of young people in the city on May 14 practicing Parkour/Freerunning a sport that involves a mix of running, jumping, and acrobatics.
