Mosul in northern Iraq remains one of the most violence cities in the country. In February 2008 Iraqi and U.S. forces began operations there that culminated in Operation Lion’s Roar in May 2008. The city was declared safe and secure, but a look at press reports shows that little has changed before and after the crackdown. On August 9, a Defense Ministry spokesman said that a new offensive was planned for the city because it was still too violent. It would take place sometime soon, but no specific date was given.
