Security In Iraq Dec 15-21, 2024

There was no political violence in Iraq for another week in December.

From December 15-21 there were no incidents by either the Islamic State or the Islamic Resistance. This was the second time in three weeks there were no attacks.

The last time there was an operation by the Islamic State was back on November 17 when an IED went off in Tuz Kharmato in eastern Salahaddin province.

The group has been silent 29 out of 47 weeks this year largely marking the death of the insurgency in Iraq. There are fears that it is regrouping in Syria however.

November 25 was the last time the Resistance launched drones against Israel.

On December 22 the spokesman for the Sayid al-Shuhada Brigades claimed that the Resistance was following a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. This contradicts a statement by the Resistance on November 28 which claimed the factions would continue attacks despite the events in Lebanon.

The real reason the Resistance is no longer targeting Israel is because they are in disarray after the fall of Assad. The pro-Iran groups were caught by surprise by how fast the regime fell and suffered a major defeat as a result. They are likely discussing what to do next.
