The Insurgency for all intense and purposes has died in Iraq. At the start of the year there were no attacks by the Islamic State in the country.
There were 4 security incidents involving the insurgency but none of them were attacks.
In Baghdad a security operation by the army came across a group of militants leading to a shootout that killed 4 soldiers. During the same sweep an ammunition dump exploded leading to the deaths of 4 more soldiers and 5 others were wounded.
In Ninewa an old IED went off leaving one civilian dead. In Salahaddin the same thing happened leaving 3 injured civilians.
The last time the Islamic State carried out an actual operation was in November 2024.
The past few years has seen the complete collapse of the group in the country. In 2022 there were 483 incidents for an average of 40.2 per month. That was down more than 2/3 in 2023 when there were just 134 incidents for an average of 11.1 per month. That trend continued into 2024 when there were only 62 incidents for an average of 5.1 per month. 22 of those incidents last year were not actual attacks but old ordinance exploding and the result of clashes during government operations.
The fall of Assad in Syria has Baghdad worried that the Islamic State will take advantage of the situation and be able to rebuild and move back into Iraq. That will be very difficult as the group has little of its leadership left in the country, hasn’t been able to rebuild its networks and most importantly has little popular support. The costs of backing the insurgency far outweigh the benefits as both the central and regional governments carried out sectarian cleansing of Sunnis across central and northern Iraq during the war. There are areas that were completely emptied of Sunnis and they have never been able to return. Insurgent activity is more likely to lead to people to flee rather than stay and provide a base which was a major reason why the group failed to rebuild after its defeat.
