Initial figures show a drop in oil revenues for Iraq in April.
Iraq exported an average of 3.365 million barrels a day in April. That was down from 3.441 million in March. The Oil Ministry however has been dramatically revising its numbers later each month so April’s average will likely go up.
More importantly the country’s earnings took another dip. In April it only made $6.67 billion from its petroleum sales. This was the lowest amount since August 2021. In February Iraq also earned $6 billion. In 2024 it was making an average of $8 billion a month. The drop is due to international prices declining over fears about the impact of America’s tariffs upon trade.
Iraq is the most oil dependent country in the world and the last few years it has passed the largest budgets in its history. Any drop in oil prices will increase the deficit and the need to borrow.
