Security In Iraq May 8-14, 2025

After a long hiatus there were two incidents involving the Islamic State in May.

 

On May 4 a security sweep through Tarmiya in northern Baghdad province came across a group of Islamic State fighters. A gun battle ensued and one member of the Hashd al-Shaabi was wounded.

 

On May 13 a group of Islamic State fighters burned five cars in the Rutba desert which is in western Anbar heading towards Jordan. No one was injured. The motivation for this incident could’ve been to intimidate people and keep them out of an insurgent area or it could have been to extort money from the locals.

 

Before that there had been no IS activity since March 1 when a checkpoint along the Baghdad-Kirkuk highway was attacked by insurgents.

 

For all of 2025 there have only been 11 IS incidents. Half of those were due to security sweeps and old IEDs going off rather than actual attacks by the militants. For all intense and purposes the insurgency is over in Iraq.
