Iraq’s Kurds were one of the biggest victims of the Iran War and Kurdistan continues to be targeted by Tehran.
On April 14 there were three separate drone incidents in Kurdistan. A drone hit Camp Sordash in Sulaymaniya which houses the Iranian Kurdish opposition party Komala. Three people were wounded as a result. The Kurdistan Democratic Party Iran was also struck at its Camp Azadi in Koya, Irbil. Finally the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Counter Terrorism Directorate announced that two drones from Iran were shot down over Irbil province.
Before that on April 9 a day after the Iran War ended the KRG’s Interior Ministry reported that drones continued to be launched against the region and were being intercepted.
The Regional Government claimed during the war it suffered 703 drone and missile attacks. 560 were aimed at Irbil province, 115 at Sulaymaniya, 26 at Dohuk and 2 at Halabja. Those resulted in 17 dead and 92 wounded.
As for the Iranian Kurdish opposition there were 15 reported attacks upon them leading to one dead and three wounded. During the war there were multiple stories in the media that the Trump administration was encouraging the Iranian Kurds to rise up against Tehran. These strikes were likely warnings to those groups to not get involved as are the current ones.
