Violence remained at a very low level for another week in Iraq. Both the Islamic State and pro-Iran groups were barely active during the second week of February.
There were a total of 14 incidents reported in the media from February 8-14. That compared to 11 the first week of the month, 16 the last full week of January and 12 the third week of that month.
6 incidents were by pro-Iran groups. They bombed convoys working for the U.S. in Diwaniya, Muthanna and twice in Salahaddin. Two IEDs were also dismantled in Muthanna.
There were just 8 incidents by the Islamic State, the same amount as the first week of February. Attacks by the group have been in the tens and teens for five months now the lowest level of activity by the insurgency since 2003.
Those attacks occurred in Anbar (2), Babil (1), Diyala (4), and Kirkuk (1).
They left 8 killed and 3 wounded. 2 civilians and 6 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) lost their lives and 1 ISF and 2 Hashd al-Shaabi were injured. There were 7 dead in Anbar, 2 wounded in Babil, and 2 casualties in Diyala.
As usual almost all of the 8 IS incidents were defensive in nature. There were two IEDs aimed at soldiers in western Anbar. In Diyala there were two shootings and a gun battle. Two of those were in the Muqdadiya district in the center but the last was in the northeast which has seen more activity over recent months. These were aimed at keeping people and the security forces out of IS areas.
A cafe was bombed in Diyala’s Muqdadiya and a grenade was thrown at the house of an Asayesh member in Kirkuk City. These were likely done for intimidation.
Finally, two Hashd were wounded by an IED in the Jurf al-Sakhr district of Babil. This is a target of opportunity for IS since it is a large Kataib Hezbollah base.
