Security In Iraq May 15-21, 2023

Violence in Iraq went back down to its normal level during the third week of May. There were just three incidents reported from May 15-21 with those taking place in Baghdad (1), Diyala (1) and Ninewa (1).

 

There were 6 incidents during the second week of May and 2 the first week. For 18 of the 19 weeks in 2023 security incidents have been in single digits. Not only that but for 15 of those weeks there have been 5 or fewer incidents each week. These are all signs of how far the Islamic State has fallen in the country. It can barely operate anymore.

 

The week’s attacks left 2 dead and 6 wounded. 2 Hashd al-Shaabi lost their lives while 2 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and 4 Hashd were injured. There were 6 casualties in Baghdad and 2 in Diyala.

 

In Baghdad a home of a Hashd member was attacked leaving 2 dead and 4 wounded. It was the deadliest incident of the week. It took place in the Tarmiya district in the north which is a long time insurgent base. The raid was likely aimed at intimidating the local security forces.

 

In Diyala and Ninewa checkpoints were shot at. In the former 2 police were wounded.

 

None of the three incidents during the week were offensive and nature and all took place in rural areas of the country which are the only places IS is not active in.
