Security In Iraq May 22-28, 2023

The Islamic State continues to operate at its lowest level ever in Iraq. During the fourth week of May there were only 3 incidents. That matched the same number the week before. For 19 of the 20 weeks in 2023 incidents have been in single digits. For 16 of those weeks there have been five or less incidents per week. This marks the lowest point in the insurgency’s history in Iraq.

 

The week’s violence took place in Anbar (1), Diyala (1), and Ninewa (1). Only two of those were actual attacks.

 

They left 1 dead member of the Hashd al-Shaabi and 1 Hashd, 1 member of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and 1 civilian injured.

 

In Nukhaib in southern Anbar an old IED killed 1 Hashd and wounded another. In western Diyala along the border of Salahaddin a sticky bomb went off wounding a civilian and a policeman. IS is barely active in this area so this counted as the sole offensive act by the group during the week. Finally, the security forces stopped an infiltration attempt in Ninewa. As usual, all of these incidents were in rural areas as that is the only place IS can now operate in.
