Security In Iraq Oct 1-7, 2023

The Islamic State is disappearing in Iraq. For the second time in 2023 and only the second time since the U.S. invasion no security incidents were reported by the insurgency from October 1-7. In September there were only a total of 5 incidents, which was the lowest monthly total since 2003.

 

The death of the insurgency has been a long time coming. After IS’s defeat by the Iraqi government in 2017 it proclaimed that it would return. It had bases across several provinces. It worked to force people out of rural areas in places like central and northeast Diyala and in southern Kirkuk to expand its area of control. At the same time it was smuggling in people and material from Syria. There were still the annual Ramadan and summer offensives. As late as 2022 it appeared like the Islamic State was in a long process of rebuilding and would continue to be a thorn in the side of the Iraqi people.

 

By 2023 everything fell apart. Attacks steadily decreased. There were no offensives. The group was not able to rebuild its networks and was relegated to the countryside. Its membership was devastated and it was not able to recruit new members in Iraq. That leaves the remaining IS elements solely focused upon survival.

 

This is a huge victory for Iraq which has seen so much violence for decades and decades.
