October saw nearly daily attacks upon Israel by Iraq’s Islamic Resistance. Not only that but there were usually multiple attacks per day. The result was a massive increase in strikes against Israel. On the other hand the Islamic State was barely active during the month.
There were only 4 incidents involving the Islamic State in October. One of those wasn’t even an attack. In the Muqdadiya district in eastern Diyala a car full of Hashd was fired upon killing two and wounding another. In Kirkuk an army unit was ambushed leaving 4 dead and 4 injured. An IED also left 9 civilians wounded within Kirkuk City. A security sweep also came upon some insurgents that led to gunfire and 1 Asayesh killed.
The group also suffered a major setback when its Wali/Governor of Iraq was killed in a joint Iraq-U.S. operation. 2 US service members were wounded as well. The Islamic State has never been able to rebuild its leadership which is a major reason why the group failed to rebuild in Iraq.
There were 66 attacks by the Islamic Resistance during the month.
At the start of October rockets were fired at Baghdad Airport. The month before there was a similar attack. This was aimed at the U.S. presence in the country. These have largely ended after a ceasefire was negotiated by the Sudani government and Iran.
The Resistance has focused upon Israel since then especially after Hezbollah was targeted. The result was 65 attacks upon Israel. This was by far the most operations by the resistance since the Gaza War started at the end of 2023. In September for instance there were just 30 attacks which was the previous high.
Baghdad is worried that these attacks will lead to some sort of Israeli retaliation. Talks with the Resistance to dial back their operations have failed. The government also sent two delegations to Tehran for help but they were rejected. Finally, the Sudani government has asked the United States for help with Israel.
To make things worse Axios quoted two Israeli intelligence officers who said Iran may use Iraq to launch attacks upon Israel. This has all led to growing tension and worries about what will happen next.
