It’s still Ramadan and the Islamic State has not launched its annual offensive yet. Incidents remained in single digits during the first week of April showing no real change in insurgent activity.
From April 1-7 there were 5 security incidents reported in Iraq. Those took place in Kirkuk (3), Ninewa (1), and Salahaddin (1). This is the 10th straight week incidents have been in single digits. 12 of the 13 weeks in 2023 incidents have been in single digits as well. This continues the trend that started in 2022.
There were 8 casualties during the week. 1 Hashd al-Shaabi was killed in Kirkuk and 7 were wounded made up of 3 Hashd and 4 civilians. Kirkuk had the most casualties with 4 and there were 2 each in Ninewa and Salahaddin.
In Kirkuk, an IED targeted a police vehicle and there were two attacks upon the Hashd that left a total of 1 Hashd dead and 3 wounded. Those were likely meant to keep the Hashd out of IS areas.
In Ninewa an old IED went off that wounded 2. That meant there were only 4 actual attacks by the Islamic State during the week.
Finally and IED wounded 2 in southern Salahaddin.
Out of the 4 actual attacks during the start of April none were offensive in nature. All took place in rural areas of the country as well. This is another sign of how isolated IS is and how little it currently impacts Iraq.
