Security In Iraq, Apr 1-7, 2024

The Islamic State has gone back to barely being active in Iraq. Pro-Iran groups continue to claim drone strikes on Israel.

 

During the first week of April there was one attack by the Islamic State. That occurred when a checkpoint in the Makhmour district of Ninewa was assaulted. There were no casualties.

 

The last full week of March there were no incidents by the insurgency. So far this year the group is only averaging 2 incidents per week. That’s barely changed from last year when there were an average of 2.6 incidents per week. This is the lowest level of violence by the militants since 2003.

 

Iraq’s Islamic Resistance claimed two more drone strikes on Israel during the week. There are worries that these continued attacks may lead Israel to retaliate against Iraq. That would be unlikely unless something was seriously damaged or there were casualties since Israel has more important issues to deal with.
