With the Islamic State’s summer offensive over security largely went back to normal at the start of October. Insurgent attacks were in single digits. There were no incidents by pro-Iran groups who were too busy fighting their rivals the Sadrists in the south.
There were 9 security incidents reported in Iraq from October 1-7. That compared to 10 the last full week of September.
Sadrists fired rockets at the Hashd headquarters in Basra during a gun battle in the city. Two people were killed and 10 wounded as a result. There have been clashes off and on throughout the south between Sadr’s followers and members of the Coordination Framework its main rival.
There was also a rocket attack on Baghdad’s Green Zone. This was likely the work of Sadr’s forces as well. There have been missile strikes on the Green Zone since parliament met again after several weeks hiatus.
That left 7 incidents by the Islamic State. Those took place in Babil (2), Baghdad (2), Kirkuk (1) and Salahaddin (2).
They left 4 dead and 6 wounded. 1 Hashd al-Shaabi, 1 civilian and 2 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) were killed. 2 civilians, 2 Hashd and 2 ISF were also injured.
There was a shooting and an IED in northern Babil that left 1 civilian dead and 2 wounded. Usually the Islamic State focuses upon Jurf al-Sakhr in the northeast but they occasionally venture out to other northern parts of the province.
There were two shootings in Baghdad one in Tarmiya in the north and another in Latifiya in the south. The latter was an assassination. 2 police were killed and a soldier injured as a result. IS was largely dormant in the capital province for weeks but has recently returned. The group usually operates out of Tarmiya but Latifiya is a long time IS area as well.
A soldier was dismantling an IED in Kirkuk when it blew up on him. There were two more bombs in Salahaddin’s Baiji district as well. That caused the death of one Hashd and two more wounded.
Out of the 7 incidents only the assassination in Latifiya was offensive in nature. The other 6 were the usual defensive operations where the Islamic State was trying to keep people and the government out of its areas.
