Violence is back to its regular low level in Iraq. Islamic State attacks were at single digits again while there was no activity by pro-Iran groups during the third week of October.
From October 15-21 there were 6 incidents by the Islamic State. There were 5 the week before and 7 the first week of October. For 25 of the 39 weeks of 2022 incidents have been in single digits.
IS attacks took place in Baghdad (1), Diyala (3), Salahaddin (1), and Sulaymaniya (1).
They left 4 dead and 7 wounded. 2 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and 2 Peshmerga were killed while 2 Peshmerga and 5 ISF were injured.
In Tarmiya in northern Baghdad insurgents attacked an army unit leaving 1 soldier dead and 3 wounded. In Diyala a college was hit by mortar fire, a checkpoint was attacked and after IS failed to kidnap a man his house was blown up. There was an IS attack in the Dour district of Salahaddin. Finally an IED left 9 peshmerga dead and wounded in the Garmian district of southern Sulaymaniya.
This was an unusual week because 3 of the 6 incidents, the attack in Tarmiya, the mortar fire in Diyala and the IED in Sulaymaniya, were offensive. Usually almost all IS activity is defensive aimed at keeping people and the government out of its areas. Still, there were so few attacks and all of them were in rural areas they still had little impact upon Iraq as a whole.
