Violence in Iraq dropped during the second week of October. There were fewer incidents by the Islamic State. On the other hand, Sadrists and Hashd elements were active.
There were only 8 security incidents reported in Iraq from October 8-14. The week before there were 9 incidents.
Sadrists fired rockets at Baghdad’s Green Zone which wounded 10 civilians. This was a protest against the Coordination Framework moving ahead with forming a new government which Moqtada al-Sadr once hoped to control.
Pro-Iran groups also conducted two operations. In Ninewa rockets were fired at a Turkish military base which is a favorite targets of these factions. They also launched missiles at the Khor Mor gas field in Sulaymaniya. These factions claim they are standing up for Iraqi sovereignty and against foreign occupation as the justification for attacking the Turks which have had troops based in Iraq since the 1990s. The incident in Sulaymaniya was likely political in nature to tell the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan that runs the province to stay with the Coordination Framework in talks about forming a new government.
That left just 5 incidents by the Islamic State. It carried out 7 attacks the week before. Now that it’s summer offensive is over the security situation has returned to normal. For 24 of the 38 weeks of 2022 IS incidents have been in single digits.
IS attacks took place in Anbar (1), Baghdad (3), and Ninewa (1). They left 5 dead and 9 wounded. 5 civilians were killed, while 1 members of the Iraqi Security Forces, 2 civilians and 6 Hashd were injured.
In Anbar an IED went off along the Syrian border that wounded a border policeman and two Hashd. In Baghdad 2 ex-Awakening members were shot and wounded in Abu Ghraib in the west while two IEDs exploded in Tarmiya in the north that left 4 civilians dead and 4 Hashd injured. Finally, one man was gunned down in eastern Ninewa. Out of those five incidents only the attack on the former Awakening members was offensive in nature. The other four were the usual types of incidents where the militants were trying to keep people and the government out of areas it controls. As usual none of these attacks were in urban areas.
