Security In Iraq Aug 1-7, 2023

The Islamic State remained barely active in Iraq during the start of August. There were just four security incidents reported from August 1-7. That was the 26^th straight week in 2023 with single digit security incidents. Only one week during the year has there been double digit attacks.

 

The 4 incidents took place in Kirkuk (1), Ninewa (1), and Salaahddin (2).

 

An IED exploded in southern Kirkuk injured four soldiers.

 

In Hatra, Ninewa there was a shootout with militants.

 

The most serious incidents took place in Salahaddin. Four power towers were blown up and more bombs were discovered at some other towers and dismantled. During the summer the Islamic State has routinely gone after the power network hoping to deprive Iraqis of electricity in an attempt to turn them against the government.
