In 2023 the Islamic State is barely operating in Iraq anymore. The second week of August was another example with barely any violence.
From August 8-14 there were just two incidents reports, one in Diyala and another in Salahaddin.
Those left 1 dead Hashd and 1 Hashd and 2 soldiers wounded.
In Diyala an IED went off in the Burhiz area in the south that left two soldiers injured.
In the Hamrin Mountains of Salahaddin IS launched an attack upon the Hashd leaving 1 Hashd dead and 1 wounded. The goal was likely to keep the security forces out of the mountains which are a long time insurgent base.
This was the 27th straight week in 2023 that there were single digit incidents in Iraq. Only one week this year has seen double digit attacks. For all intense and purposes the Islamic State is dead in Iraq incapable of carrying out any type of large scale operation. It only works in small groups largely to protect its few remaining sanctuaries which are all in isolated parts of the country.
