Security In Iraq Aug 15-21, 2023

 

Today, the Islamic State is largely dormant in Iraq. During the third week of August there were only two incidents and one of them wasn’t an attack.

 

The incidents took place in Kirkuk and Salahaddin.

 

In Kirkuk an IED went off in southern Kirkuk which left five soldiers wounded.

 

The Hashd discovered and dismantled an IED in Salahaddin.

 

This was the 28^th straight week where incidents have been in single digits. For 30 of the 31 weeks this year that has also been true. For the year IS has only been averaging 3.4 incidents per week. In comparison the group averaged 9.1 incidents per week last year. The Islamic State is no longer capable of carrying out large operations and failed to launch a Ramadan or summer offensives this year.
