Final Results Of Kurdistan’s Provincial Elections

Iraq’s Election Commission announced the final results of Kurdistan’s parliamentary vote.

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) came in first place but was actually the biggest loser. It won 39 seats which was down from 45 it took in 2019. One reason for the loss was the Federal Supreme Court reducing the number of parliamentary seats from 111 to 100.

This is the biggest story from the election. The KDP has attempted to monopolize all the major positions in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in recent years. That’s because the PUK has been plagued by divisions and loss some of its standing. Going from 45 to 39 seats will mean the KDP will have to enter into hard negotiations to maintain its power.

The Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) took 23 seats up from 21 in 2019.

The opposition parties went from 34 seats in 2019 to 33 seats. Gorran used to be the main rival to the PUK and KDP but their alliance with the former and leadership differences have destroyed the party’s standing. It won 12 seats in 2019 and only got 1 this time. New Generation has replaced it going from 8 seats in 2019 to 15. The Islamic Parties (The Kurdistan Islamic Group, the Kurdistan Islamic Union, the Kurdistan Islamic Movement) took 12 seats in 2019 and got 10 (Kurdistan Islamic Union, Kurdistan Justice Group) this time around.
