Security In Iraq Oct 15-21, 2024

The Islamic State was inactive for another week in Iraq while the Iraqi Islamic Resistance made sporadic attacks upon Israel.

 

There was one incident during the third week of October involving the Islamic State. During a security sweep in Kirkuk a joint-Iraqi-KRG unit came across a group of insurgents. That led to gunfire and one Asayesh was killed.

 

Starting in September the group attempted a comeback being active for three weeks straight. That petered out afterwards marking another sign that the insurgency is dead in Iraq.

 

It appears that the warnings from the Sudani government and Iran to the Islamic Resistance had a slight affect during the week. Rather than carrying out attacks every day versus Israel there were operations 5 out of 7 days with a total of 8 drone strikes.

 

Baghdad and Tehran are both afraid of Israeli retaliation and there have been talks for weeks with the Resistance to take a step back. The factions have largely been unresponsive and only increased its threats.

 

Since Israel moved against Hezbollah the Iraqi Resistance has picked up its operations against Israel. There were just 6 attacks in August. That jumped to 30 in September the most since the start of the Gaza War. That has been topped by 43 incidents so far in October.
