Security In Iraq Oct 1-7, 2024

Both the Islamic State and the Iraqi Islamic Resistance were active in Iraq during the first week of October.

 

The Islamic State carried out 3 operations during the week. In Diyala militants opened fire on a car in the Muqdadiya district killing 2 Hashd al-Shaabi and wounding another. In Kirkuk IS set up an ambush leaving 4 soldiers dead and 4 others injured. A bomb went off in Kirkuk city that left 9 civilians wounded that could’ve been the work of the insurgency but it’s unclear.

 

Overall there were 20 casualties, 6 dead and 14 wounded. That’s the most casualties by the insurgency since the last full week of March.

 

The Islamic State is attempting to be more active in Iraq but it is still at such a low level it’s insignificant. From January to July the group averaged 1.3 incidents per week. From August to the first week of October that went up to 1.5 per week.

 

The Iraqi Resistance dramatically upped its attacks since Israel started taking on Hezbollah. There were 18 incidents during the 1^st week of October. There were 8 during the last two days of September and 18 the last full week of that month. Compare that to 2 during the 3^rd week of September and 1 the 1^st week.

 

Kataib Hezbollah, Al-Nujaba and Sayid al-Shuhada have been blamed for the strikes. The Sudani government has been talking to them for weeks trying to get them to stop fearing Israeli retaliation but they have only upped their threats.
