Security In Iraq Sep 1-7, 2023

The slow death of the Iraqi insurgency continued for another week. From September 1-7 there was only one security incident. This was the 30^th straight week and the 32^nd of 33 weeks during the year where incidents were in single digits.

 

The sole attack took place in Diyala when an army checkpoint was attacked in the Muqdadiya district. One soldier was wounded as a result. Central Diyala used to be the main base of the Islamic State but violence has dramatically dropped off there like in the rest of the country.

 

The insurgency appears to be solely concerned with surviving in Iraq. That means it barely ever operates since it can’t afford any losses. It has failed to recruit in Iraq, and almost all of its members are in Syria especially in the Al-Hol displacement camp there. The result is that IS has holed up in Iraq and is barely active anymore.
