Iraqi security news during the third week of November was dominated by pro-Iran groups and American retaliation as there were no incidents by the Islamic State.
From November 15-21 there were 6 incidents reported in the media all by pro-Iran groups. There were none by the Islamic State. This marked the 5th week in 2023 where the Islamic State was dormant and another sign that the insurgency is almost dead in Iraq.
Pro-Iran groups carried out 4 attacks upon the Al-Asad airbase in Anbar with drones and a ballistic missile that wounded 8 Americans. That led the Biden administration to strike back hitting several Hashd sites that resulted in 8 dead and 4 wounded. This was the first time that the US struck these factions in Iraq.
The Al-Harir airbase in Irbil also suffered two drone attacks during the week.
Kataib Hezbollah threatened to escalate its attacks after the US strike showing that this situation is not going to be resolved any time soon.
