Security In Iraq Nov 22-28, 2023

During the fourth week of November the Islamic State was absent from Iraq once again. All the violence was due to pro-Iran groups.

 

There were 4 incidents reported in the media from November 22-28. All of those were by factions aligned with Iran. Al-Asad airbase in Anbar was hit by rockets. Al-Harir airbase in Irbil was targeted with drones three times. These attacks have trailed off as the ceasefire in Gaza has gone into effect. Pro-Iran groups began these operations in October when the Gaza War began. Al-Asad and Al-Harir house U.S. troops and these factions are trying to show their opposition to Washington’s support for Israel.

 

This was another week when the insurgency was absent from Iraq. This was the 6^th week in 2023 when there were no attacks by the Islamic State. This is the first time this has happened since 2003 and a sign of the decline of the group.
