The number of security incidents in Iraq doubled from the second to third weeks of May. This was due to an increase in operations by both the Islamic State and pro-Iran groups. The overall number of attacks was still insignificant compared to previous years.
There were a total of 18 security incidents reported in the media from May 15-21. That was up from 9 the week before, but down from 31 the first week of May when the Islamic State was winding down its Ramadan offensive.
Factions tied to Iran carried out 6 attacks during the week. Convoys working for the U.S. were bombed in Babil, Dhi Qar, Diwaniya x2, and Muthanna x2. Rockets were also fired at a Turkish base in Ninewa which killed a civilian. In total there have been 10 successful incidents by these groups in May.
During the week there were 12 incidents by the Islamic State. That was up from 7 the second week of May. The attacks occurred in Anbar (1), Baghdad (1), Diyala (3), Kirkuk (3), Ninewa (1), and Salahaddin (3).
They led to 9 deaths and 6 wounded. 2 members of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), 2 Hashd al-Shaabi and 5 civilians were killed while 1 Hashd, 2 civilians and 3 ISF were injured. Diyala had 8 casualties, Ninewa and Salahaddin had 3 each, and Kirkuk had 2.
An IED went off in front of a Hashd base in Fallujah. In Kirkuk a Federal Police base was attacked, there was a gun battle with the Hashd in Salahaddin, and rockets were fired in the Tuz Kharmato district. Those were the only offensive operations by IS during the week. The other 8 were defensive meant to keep civilians and the government out of insurgent areas. Only 1 incident was in a city, Fallujah, while the other 11 were in rural and mountainous regions. Despite the increase in incidents the Islamic State remains largely sidelined in Iraq.
