Security in Iraq remained relatively the same during the fourth week of May. The number of incidents by the Islamic State stayed the same. There was a drop in operations by pro-Iran groups however.
The total number of incidents has fluctuated up and down throughout May. The first week of the month there were 31 incidents as the Islamic State’s Ramadan offensive was winding down. The next week there were only 9. That doubled the third week to 18 and then there were 13 the fourth week.
There was just one incident by groups working with Iran. That consisted of a drone being shot down over Baghdad International Airport. There have been 10 incidents by these factions so far in May. That’s down from April when there were 19.
The Islamic State was responsible for 12 security incidents during the week. That was the same amount as the week before. For 9 weeks from February 1-7 to April 1-7 Iraq averaged single digits in incidents for all but one week. From April 15-21, 2021 to January 22-28, 2022 18 of 22 weeks incidents were in the teens. This amounts to the lowest number of incidents per week since 2003.
From May 22-28 insurgent incidents took place in Diyala (5), Kirkuk (3), Ninewa (2), Salahaddin (1), and Sulaymaniya (1).
They led to 21 dead and 11 wounded. Those were relatively high numbers as casualties have dipped along with the number of attacks.
3 members of the Iraqi Security Forces, 4 Hashd al-Shaabi and 14 civilians were killed. 3 Hashd and 8 civilians were also wounded. Diyala had the most casualties with 18 followed by 11 in Kirkuk and 3 in Ninewa.
Two villages were attacked in Diyala. The first one which took place in the Khanaqin district in the northeast led to 6 civilian deaths and 8 wounded. There were either aimed at driving people out or perhaps making people pay taxes. All five incidents in the province were defensive meant to maintain control over IS areas.
The militants were back to burning fields in Kirkuk where two were set on fire. This is an annual occurrence during the summer meant to destroy crops and intimidate the population. In one incident the security forces arrived and were hit by small arms fire and an IED.
In Ninewa there was a gun battle with the Hashd and a foiled infiltration attempt.
A checkpoint was shot at in the Tuz Kharmato district of eastern Salahaddin.
Another checkpoint was sniped at in Sulaymaniya.
All 12 incidents were in rural areas. The two field burnings could be considered offensive operations but the others were all defensive. This is the current state of the insurgency. There are few attacks. Those that occur are in areas with few people and are aimed at keeping the Islamic State’s authority. This has little impact upon the overall country.
