Security In Iraq Mar 8-14, 2023

The Islamic State is at its nadir in Iraq. The group is barely active anymore and no longer has an impact upon the country.

 

During the second week of March there were only 2 incidents by the group. The week before there were 3 incidents. During 2023 9 out of 10 weeks have seen incidents in single digits which was the trend during 2022.

 

In Diyala’s Khanaqin district in the northeast a man who’d been kidnapped by IS was found dead. He was abducted for ransom which is still one of the main sources of revenue for the group. While in Tuz Kharmato in eastern Salahaddin the security forces were shot at leading to 1 dead and 1 injured. Both of these occurred in rural areas which is the only place where the insurgency is still active.
