The Islamic State continued with its annual summer offensive into the start of September. That being said the number of attacks is far below previous campaigns. There was also one incident by pro-Iran groups.
There were a total of 11 incidents in Iraq from September 1-7 reported in the media. There were 23 the last full week of August but before that incidents were in single digits. The increase is due to the Islamic State’s summer campaign.
Pro-Iran groups lobbed some missiles into Irbil. They landed in a town with no casualties. These factions have been attacking Kurdistan off and on to warn the two Kurdish parties about their positions on forming the next government. These incidents have dropped off however as those talks have escalated with protests and open fighting between Shiite parties at the end of August.
There were 10 incidents by the Islamic State. At the very end of July the insurgents launched their summer offensive. Attacks have been in double digits four of the last six weeks since then. That is still far below the level set in the last two years showing the decline in the group.
IS incidents took place in Babil (1), Baghdad (1), Diyala (3), Kirkuk (3), Salahaddin (1) and Sulaymaniya (1).
They left 3 dead and 20 wounded. 1 member of the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF) and 2 civilians were killed while 2 civilians and 18 ISF were injured. All five provinces that experienced attacks saw single digit casualties for the week.
Out of the 10 incidents three were offensive in nature. In Babil IS fired mortars at the Iskandiriya district in the north. Almost all the attacks in the province are in the Jurf al-Sakhr district in the northeast so this showed the militants branching out a bit during their new offensive. The Hashd were attacked in the Samarra district in central Salahaddin. Finally in Sulaymaniya an IS gunman on a motorcycle wounded 8 Kurdish policemen with a grenade and gunfire. The other seven incidents were defensive aimed at keeping people and the government out of IS controlled areas. This is another sign of the weakness of the Islamic State. Even during a campaign it can only slightly increase its attacks and all of them are in the rural and mountainous areas where there is little impact upon Iraq overall.
