The Islamic State’s summer offensive might still be going on as there were double digit attacks by the group again during the third week of September. There were no incidents pro-Iran groups for another week.
There was a total of 12 security incidents in Iraq reported in the media from September 15-21. There were all done by the Islamic State and took place in Baghdad (1), Diyala (3), Kirkuk (4), Ninewa (3), and Salahaddin (1).
There were 4 deaths and 14 wounded as a result. 1 Hashd al-Shaabi and 3 civilians lost their lives and 2 members of the Iraqi Security Forces, 4 civilians and 8 Hashd were injured. Ninewa had 11 casualties followed by 6 in Diyala and 1 in Baghdad.
There was a shooting in northern Baghdad’s Tarmiya which has been a long time IS area. Almost all the violence in the capital province takes place there. This is a change from previous months when there was almost no activity in the governorate. Now there is about one incident per week.
Two checkpoints were attacked and a civilian was gunned down in Diyala. All of those took place in the Muqdadiya district in the middle of the province which is one of the main base of operations for the insurgency.
Two more checkpoints were hit in Kirkuk, mortars were fired at a shrine and an IED was discovered at an electricity tower. The shrine attack was a rare offensive operation during the week.
Ninewa saw the most casualties during the week because of a security operation which found some IS fighters in a tunnel who detonated a suicide bomb. That left 1 Hashd and 8 more wounded. There was a shooting and an old bomb went off as well.
Finally, in Salahaddin the militants attacked a Hashd brigade in Dujail which is in the southeast. That was the second offensive operation of the week by IS.
The Islamic State’s summer offensive started in the last full week of July with 10 incidents. Since then, there were 8 incidents the first week of August, 14 the second week, 5 the third, 19 the last full week of August, 10 the first week of September, 5 the second week and 12 the third week. That is still far fewer attacks then the last two campaigns launched by IS. The dearth of offensive attacks also shows how limited the Islamic State currently is. Even during an offensive it is really only able to increase attacks where it is already based and the majority of those are defensive meant to keep the government out of insurgent controlled areas.
